The Great Dane is one of the most distinguished and elegant types of canines. The name Great Danes means grand Danois or "Big Danish". However, many other names have been used over the centuries. They all have on ething in common, since they portray a giant dog with a heavy head for hunting purposes. At one time it was only one of the dozen varieties of dogs. Now it is recognized as distinctive enough to have it's own name.
Great Danes were originally devoloped as Boar hounds. Europe's boar was savage, swift, powerful, and well-armed. To tackle it, a super dog was needed. We who fancy the Great Dane therefor consider him the king of dogs.He is not merely a "pretty" dog. He is noble, couargeous, and has size, speed, weight, and endurance. The Great Dane , who is friendly and dependable, is noted as the "Apollo of dogs." They are truely Gentle giants.
Don't forget, however, that they are not vicious dogs. Their size may tend to be intimidating, but they generally won't hurt people. You have to keep in mind that anything a poodle, for instance, would do seems to be less important and is overlooked mor easily because of their size. If a poodle sat in your lap, you wouldn't think much of it. On the other hand, if a Dane jumped in your lap, you might shove him off, if possible, and run away screaming. However, the Dane wasn't trying to hurt you. He just wanted attention. So, don't fear what Danes do just because they do it on a larger scale. They are usually just as loving and wonderful dogs as any smaller dog might be!!!!!
